Back Pain and Chiropractic Care

Back pain can be a debilitating problem. Having back pain cannot only interfere with your job, but affect you're everyday life, and make spending time with your family and kids difficult. Studies have shown that almost 80% of the population of United States will experience back pain sometime during your life.

Your spine consists of three main sections: the cervical spine (neck), the thoracic spine (upper back), and the lumbar spine (lower back), which is attached to the sacral spine at the base of the spinal column. Your spine plays a very important role in protecting the central nervous system. The central nervous system starts at the brain, runs down through the spine, and branches out through the entire body. At each vertebrae in the spine, nerves exit out to control every muscle, organ, and function of the body. Because of the numerous responsibilities of the nervous system, only about 10% of the nervous system actually feels pain. Aside from injuries and accidents, most common cause of back pain is a misalignment, or subluxation, of the spine. So, while you will feel instantaneous pain due to an injury, accident, a fall, or lifting something improperly — other problems may continue for years before you feel any pain. At Aligned Health Chiropractic, we often see people who have had problems with their spine for years, and just recently started to feel pain. Pain is your body's way of telling you something is wrong, And it needs to be corrected.

Common Causes of Back Pain

The main causes of back pain are subluxations, tendon and ligament sprains, muscle strains, disc degeneration or herniation, and osteoarthritis.

  1. Subluxations
Subluxations, or misalignments, cause the vertebrae in the spine to press against the nerves. When the nerves become pinched or irritated, you start to feel pain. When there is pressure on the nerves, the information provided to your brain is incomplete. This can cause many problems, ranging from issues such as a weaker immune system, headaches, fatigue, constipation, to high blood pressure, heart conditions, stomach problems, incontinence, infertility, and miscarriages.

  2. Woman with back painMuscles, ligament & tendon injuries
Back pain due to muscle strains and sprains to tendons and ligaments, often bring acute pain. But these injuries will also cause spine to lose it's proper alignment. If these subluxations are left untreated, it can lead to the loss of your proper range of motion, and ultimately to osteoarthritis.

  3. Disc degeneration
Between each of your vertebrae, there is a disc to help maintain proper spacing of your spine. If this disc starts to degenerate, the space between the joints will get smaller, which will start it irritate the nerve fibers. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that will cause inflammation to the nerves, and when this happens, you will feel back pain.
