Arthritis and Chiropractic Care
What is arthritis?
The word “arthritis” means “joint inflammation.” In some manifestations, arthritis is an autoimmune disorder of the joints; in others it occurs when the cartilage that lines the joint surfaces wears out.
What are the symptoms of arthritis?
- Tender, warm and swollen joints
- Joint pain and stiffness that lasts more than 30 minutes after a long rest
- Fatigue accompanied by a sense of not feeling well
- Feelings of sprain or strain that take longer than normal to heal
- Numbness or tingling of the hands
There are multiple types of arthritis. The most common type is Osteoarthritis, which is the change of a joint due to abnormal wear and tear. This is often the reason why people get knee and hip replacements.
The second most common type is Rheumatoid Arthritis, which is an autoimmune disorder that causes change of joints in the hands, spine, hips and toes by self-destruction.
How can chiropractic care help arthritis?
During your initial appointment, Dr. Schierer will perform a comprehensive screen of your reflexes, body symmetry, joint health, and spine alignment. He will then draw up a specific treatment plan that outlines your road to better health.
If you do indeed have joint misalignments – called “subluxations” – your body can wear down more quickly, irritating your nerves and causing pain. Dr. Schierer is trained to detect and correct those subluxations with gentle, specific adjustments, physical therapy and acupuncture. Correction of the underlying cause will result in diminished pain by increasing the range of motion of your joints and adding stability. This decreases inflammatory fluid buildup in the joints, making you feel happy and healthy!
The benefits of chiropractic care don’t end at the spine; many arthritic patients find long term relief in regular chiropractic adjustments. Stress and daily life can aggravate your disorders, including arthritis. Chiropractic care takes stress off your joints and nervous system, allowing your body to rest, relax and heal the way it was designed to do.
Post-adjustment, have a seat in our massage chairs or work with our therapist to melt your stress and pain through various therapies allowing your body to heal. Dr. Schierer will prescribe the treatments that are best for your specific symptoms. Many arthritic patients find relief at Aligned Health Chiropractic!
How can massage therapy help with arthritis?
The use of hands-on massage with chiropractic care can also ease joint stiffness, encourage joint mobility, decrease anxiety, and promote more restful sleep in patients with arthritis.
“Massage can result in a significant reduction in pain” for people with all types of arthritis, says Tiffany Field, PhD, a research psychologist at the University of Miami Medical School. Any type of full-body massage therapy that involves moderate pressure should help relieve arthritis pain and ease tension, Field says.
People with arthritis who experience chronic symptoms may consider using massage therapy regularly to help manage their pain and stiffness, or to promote better sleep that can, in turn, relieve pain in muscles and joints.

Aligned Health Chiropractic can help prevent arthritis & bring relief from arthritis
I don’t feel that I have arthritis yet, but I have aches and pains and I see my parents struggle with it! Can chiropractic care help me prevent arthritis?
Yes! Chiropractic care is focused on the body’s ability to heal itself. By correcting joint and spine symmetry and subluxations, Dr. Schierer can help increase range of motion in your body, which will assist in daily movements like walking, sitting, and exercise.
Chiropractic and its complimentary treatments – which include nutrition, massage, and physical therapy – can be used as a preventative measure against arthritis. Because chiropractic focuses on joint manipulation, joints can be directly adjusted to reduce pain and inflammation. In general, the stiffness and pain that can result from various forms of arthritis can be alleviated with chiropractic treatment.
